ફ્રેઝલ ક્રિયાપદ એટલે શું?

ફ્રેઝલ ક્રિયાપદ (phrasal verb) એટલે એક કે બે પાર્ટિકલ (particle) સાથે જોડાયેલું ક્રિયાપદ. પાર્ટિકલ સામાન્ય રીતે ક્રિયાવિશેષણ કે નામયોગી હોય છે, જેમ કે up, down, in, out, on, off, away, back કે over. આ જોડાણ અર્થના એક એકમ તરીકે કામ કરે છે, અને એ અર્થ તેના ભાગો પરથી અનુમાન કરવો ઘણી વાર અશક્ય હોય છે.

2007માં બ્રિટિશ નેશનલ કોર્પસ (British National Corpus) ના એક અભ્યાસમાં ડી ગાર્ડનર (Dee Gardner) અને માર્ક ડેવિસ (Mark Davies) ને ફ્રેઝલ ક્રિયાપદોના 5,18,923 પ્રયોગ મળ્યા. તેમાંથી અડધાથી વધુ માત્ર 20 ક્રિયાપદો અને 8 પાર્ટિકલના જોડાણથી બનેલા હતા. એટલે જ નીચેની યાદી ક્રિયાપદ પ્રમાણે ગોઠવેલી છે: get, go, come, take, put અને બીજાં થોડાં ક્રિયાપદો પોતાના પાર્ટિકલ સાથે કેવી રીતે જોડાય છે તે શીખો, અને તમને મળતાં મોટા ભાગનાં ફ્રેઝલ ક્રિયાપદો સમજાઈ જશે.

ઘણાં ફ્રેઝલ ક્રિયાપદોના અનેક અર્થ હોય છે, પણ બધા એકસાથે શીખવાની જરૂર નથી. સૌથી વધુ વપરાતાં 150 ફ્રેઝલ ક્રિયાપદોની પોતાની PHaVE List માં મેલોડી ગાર્નિયે (Mélodie Garnier) અને નોર્બર્ટ શ્મિટ (Norbert Schmitt) એ 2015માં શોધ્યું કે થોડા મુખ્ય અર્થો જ દરેક ક્રિયાપદના વાસ્તવિક ઉપયોગનો 75% થી વધુ ભાગ આવરી લે છે. એટલે નીચે આપેલા જેવા મુખ્ય અર્થોથી શરૂઆત કરો, અને ઓછા વપરાતા અર્થો પછી ઉમેરો.

પાર્ટિકલ સામાન્ય રીતે શું અર્થ આપે છે?

પાર્ટિકલ મનસ્વી નથી હોતા. તેમના સામાન્ય અર્થો જાણી લો, પછી ઘણાં નવાં ફ્રેઝલ ક્રિયાપદોનો અર્થ અનુમાન કરવો સહેલો બની જાય છે:
