Andrei Kuzmin /
구동사(phrasal verb)는 동사에 up, out, off 같은 짧은 단어가 붙어 새로운 뜻을 만드는 표현이에요. give up은 '포기하다', look after는 '돌보다'라는 뜻이죠.
불변화사는 보통 up, down, in, out, on, off, away, back, over 같은 부사나 전치사예요.
- run out of something:
- up: 완료나 증가 (eat up, fill up, speed up).
- down: 감소나 멈춤 (slow down, calm down, shut down).
- out: 제거, 끝남, 발견 (throw out, run out, find out).
- off: 분리, 출발, 취소 (take off, set off, call off).
- on: 계속이나 시작 (carry on, go on, turn on).
- back: 돌아옴 (come back, call back, pay back).
- over: 반복이나 검토 (think over, go over, do over).
- away: 떠남이나 제거 (go away, give away, throw away).
'turn off the light'도 되고 'turn the light off'도 돼요. 'turn it off'라고 하지, 'turn off it'이라고는 하지 않아요.
'look after the kids'나 'get over a cold'처럼요.
