Andrei Kuzmin /
「put」も「up」も知っているのに、「put up with」の意味はさっぱりわからない。
不変化詞はたいてい副詞か前置詞で、up、down、in、out、on、off、away、back、overなどがあります。
- run out of something:
get、go、come、take、putなどいくつかの動詞が不変化詞とどう結びつくかを覚えれば、出会う句動詞の大半がわかるようになります。
- up: 完了や増加(eat up, fill up, speed up)。
- down: 減少や停止(slow down, calm down, shut down)。
- out: 取り除く、終わる、見つけ出す(throw out, run out, find out)。
- off: 離れる、出発する、取りやめる(take off, set off, call off)。
- on: 続ける、始める(carry on, go on, turn on)。
- back: 戻る、返す(come back, call back, pay back)。
- over: 繰り返す、見直す(think over, go over, do over)。
- away: 去る、取り去る(go away, give away, throw away)。
「turn off the light」でも「turn the light off」でもかまいません。 「turn it off」が正しく、「turn off it」とは言いません。
「look after the kids」や「get over a cold」がその例です。

「eat up」や「fill up」のupは完了を表します。
